About the Institute
The Institute was established on first June 1945 with help from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. The Institute initially started working inside the Cosmic Ray Research Unit on the grounds of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and moved to Bombay in Oct that year. Our students get the chance to get directly included in the research plans of the Institute, and many of them go on to become the best scientists in their fields. The University offers Ph.D., Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D., and M.Sc. programs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science & Science Education.
In Bombay, the Institute was housed at Kenilworth, a cottage on Pedder Road. It was introduced by Sir John Colville, Governor of Bombay on nineteenth December 1945. In 1949, as the Institute developed, it discovered its second home at the Old Yacht Club Building close to Gateway of India. The Cosmic Ray Group was the first to begin working. The Nuclear Emulsion and the Electron Magnetism Group began in 1953. Work in Computer Science and Technology in 1954, and the principal pilot machine got operational in 1956. The full-scale machine, later named the TIFRAC was charged in February 1960.
