About University

The foundation of this College was laid during the British period based on a recommendation by HT James Prinsep &Thomas Babington Macaulay on 1st Jan 1824. The University continues to stand tall even after 188 years & specializes in the Indian Tradition, Oriental Philosophy & Religion with UG programs in Sanskrit, Pali, Linguistics, Ancient Indian & World History, Bengali and English at present. Sanskrit is also taught at the PG level.

The college has a library of distinction & scholarship comprising of more than 2 lakhs books & more than 20000 manuscripts including some rare ones. The University was famous for its immense historical methods the library is frequently visited by several scholars & academicians across the world for research purposes. In terms of scholarship & intellectual output, Sanskrit College has contributed immensely to the enrichment of knowledge, growth, learning, & dvpt. of ancient Indian society and interpretation of the ancient Indian texts.
