About Presidency University
The University was established in January 1817. The establishment of PU was headed by Raja Rammohan Roy. The Presidency University is formerly known as Hindoo College & Presidency College, is a public state university located in College Street, Kolkata. The University has been recognized as an “Institute of National Eminence” by the UGC. It appeared in the inaugural top 50 of NIRF rankings in 2016.
In 1972, an article was released by the faculty members demanding that the college be given the university status. Then it was elevated to university status in 2010. The newly established college mostly admitted Hindu students from affluent families but also admitted non-Hindu students such as Muslims, Jews, Christians & Buddhists. Academically, the University is composed of 2 faculties – Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.
