About University

Netaji Subhas Open University was established on 20th August 1997. It is the premier State Open University in India established by the West Bengal Act (XIX) of 1997 and Recognized by U.G.C. & D.E.C. Professor Radharaman Chakraborty, the Director of NIAS was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of NSOU. From Jul 1998, 31 Study Centres started functioning under NSOU with a Bachelor Degree Programme (BDP) in Arts & Commerce.

At present, NSOU is continuing its work with 120 Study Centres & several subjects of studies have been added to its list of courses. The University started UG Program in Science subjects from the session Jan 2000. The PG Program in Science subjects of Mathematics and Arts Subjects of History & Social Work was started on Jan 2002 and Jan 2004 session respectively. Now the University has attained Mega University status, with more than 2,50,000 learners in 77 courses.
