About University of Calcutta

The University of Calcutta was established on 24 Jan 1857. The East India Company Court of Directors, sent a despatch to the Governor-General of India in Jul 1854, suggesting the establishment of the University.  The University adopted in the 1st instance, the pattern of the University of London & gradually introduced modifications in its constitution.

In 1937, when Dr Syamaprasad Mookerjee was the Vice-Chancellor, he requested Rabindranath Tagore to compose a song to be adopted as the University song. Kabiguru had composed two songs. Under the Indian Universities Act of 1904, the Governor-General-in-Council was empowered to define the territorial limits of the 5 universities i.e., Universities of Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Punjab, and Allahabad.
